It’s our pleasure to introduce our beautiful blog readers to our newest Richmond Weddings vendor, Cate! Cate is the owner of Violet Iris Studios, a photography and cinematography studio located right here in Richmond. Read on to learn more about why Cate now connects with her brides on a whole new level!
We specialize in high-end stylized cinematic wedding films for modern day lovebirds! I originally started out in this industry as a photographer with intentions to one day branch into cinematography!!
How did you get started in this business?
I guess this question has two parts. I fell in love with filmmaking at a very young age. I always said that I would be a director when I grew up, and in a way I get to do that now! I have also always loved photographing, and I knew I wanted to shoot weddings so that was the direction I went in. I remember early in my photographic career, a specific moment in time where my heart changed. I was attending a family wedding and my cousin had flown into town and offered to film the wedding as a gift. The moment I saw the HD final cinematic film she had produced from that wedding, I knew in the core of my being that whatever THAT was, I had to learn how to do it! So, I researched and read every book I could find on the subject of DSLR filmmaking, and I practiced for months on technique before I felt comfortable enough to begin offering that service. And here I am now! I feel incredibly grateful that I get to wake up everyday and do what I love. I get to capture memories and moments for people that they will never forget!!
What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?
I would say what sets my business apart is my style of filming. I am very detail-oriented, and I LOVE bright vibrant colors. That definitely comes from my photographic background! I also think that the way I run my business through relationship marketing has proved invaluable to me. I am there for them as not just a business owner, but as a person.
Why do you like working with weddings?
I love specializing in weddings because there is something about the dynamic of a couple that I just LOVE. The way a couple flirts with each other and looks into each other’s eyes, you can’t ever replicate those sweet genuine moments. I also love being a part of the biggest day of a couples life. I mean, what an HONOR to be in the presence of the start to their lives together!!
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the best piece of advice you can offer to engage couples?
I would say take a night off! I know working with a lot if different vendors all at once planning the biggest day of your life can be stressful. Believe me, I am doing it as we speak!! I think the most important thing to remember is to soak up and enjoy every bit of your engagement. Go on date nights when you are feeling overwhelmed, and remember why you are doing what you are doing. You are going to marry the love of your life and all of your closest family and friends will be there!! So take a moment to appreciate the process!!
Where do you find inspiration or motivation?
I find my inspiration and motivation from a myriad of places. I have always been very artistic and I LOVE to paint and sketch! I find inspiration in any type of art! My new updated website was inspired by my love of all things modern and my passion for watercolor painting.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
I am never really “away” from work! I am always scheming and dreaming of different ways to grow my business. But, if I do have a moment, you will find me with my toes in the sand and breathing in the salty air! The beach is my safe haven.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I am actually engaged at the moment and planning my own wedding, so I can connect with my brides on a whole new level. I also have a background in Brand Marketing, which has helped my business 10 fold!! I guess you could call me a marketing nerd because I am always reading the newest books in the marketing field (don’t judge)!!
