We are proud to introduce you to Rob Wilhoite, the owner of Capt. Rob’s Pigalicious Barbeque Catering! This man makes candied bacon that is out of this world! If you’re into some soulful southern food, Rob is your guy!
I started Capt. Rob’s Pigalicious Barbecue Catering in 2010. My mission is to provide brides and general clients with competition level BBQ with a down home relaxed atmosphere.
We are a catering only company. I talk myself out of a storefront daily. We only create high quality food and pay close attention to the details. We feature award-winning meats, amazing sides and appetizers that will keep your guests talking for years to come. This is southern comfort food at its finest. We can provide food for any of the wedding events, not just rehearsal dinners and receptions. We can cook either onsite or offsite and do an onsite buffet. We serve wedding groups from 30-300.
How did you get started in this business?
I grew up with both Mom and Grandma in the same kitchen. I have a food service background not only in the kitchen but also running a successful operation. I hold two culinary certificates from the University of Richmond along with many years of experience feeding family and friends. I am a Kansas City Barbecue Judge and have won multiple awards at their events in Virginia. I have also won several years in a row at the annual Chester Rotary BBQ competition called Grilling on the Green.
The event I’m most proud of is the VA Lottery’s Grill-Off a couple of years ago. We won first place and received a $5,000.00 check for my Famous Cajun Burger.
What differentiates you from other businesses in your field?
Our food makes your eyes and tastebuds happy. We are a catering only company that produces all of the award-winning meats with hickory and charcoal. No propane is used in cooking our food. I don’t know of any of the local BBQ joints that cook from scratch onsite and only cook with wood, but it makes a big difference!
When we are cooking for you, we are only cooking for one event: yours. Our selections are not mass produced. The end result is high quality food that is FRESH. Even though our food is comfort food, we can present it in an more upscale style if the bride requests it. We do this all in a relaxed backyard atmosphere where our main goal is to fill you up.
If someone leaves an event we are catering hungry, it’s their own fault!
Why do you like working with weddings?
I want to do my small part in putting a smile on the bride and groom’s faces with food that will be remembered for years to come with minimal stress. We have done weddings from real barns to upscale inns, and they all had one thing in common: the bride and groom wanted high quality, fresh food in a relaxed atmosphere.
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a bride and how did you resolve it?
Trying to feed guests southern comfort fare that are vegetarians! We cannot help vegans. We can accommodate any diet within reason with a heads up from the bridal party, including the gluten-free crowd. We can create a menu that has something for everyone to eat.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
PLAN EARLY! Ask lots of questions and sample the food. Book your caterer ASAP so that the date will not be booked by another bride or event.
Also, work with your planner or a caterer to figure out a realistic budget. You cannot feed 150 people for $10.00 a plate.
Also, take our advice on the amount of appetizers you order. It is common to over order the appetizers. They are a snack before the meal, not the meal!
Most of all, remember this is your day. Plan it for the two of you.
What or who motivates you?
My motivation comes from within. That is where any successful business person gets motivated. Catering is instant gratification. When the food passes the lips, the smiles come out. Nothing is more gratifying at the end of a long day than smiles on guests’ faces and a pat on the back from clients.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
I am a RABID VT Hokies fan. Have you seen my truck? Every weekend in the Fall we are going to a football game, if we aren’t working an event. Go Hokies!**

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I hold a United States Coast Guard Captain’s License and had my own weekend chartering company for years. That is how I came up with the name for the barbecue company. Sadly, I had to sell my boat when the BBQ business took off. I still keep up with my license though.
